Guide to Avoiding DIY Mishaps

Most will find there are always jobs that need doing a round the home and it can be very tempting to think ‘I can do that’ and have a go at your own DIY, but a lack of confidence and skill can have disastrous consequences. Some DIY jobs are best left to the experts!

Here are some suggestions of DIY jobs that require a professional

  • Inspect your Roof Tiles

Anything involving ladders and heights is potentially a risk for anyone who is not experienced but care also needs to be taken with fragile roof tiles.

A job that seems simple can end up being very costly to put right.

  • Stay Away from Gas and Electrics

Work on gas or electrics in the home can be potential fatally for an amateur DIYer.

Any work on a gas boiler should be carried out by a Gas Safety Registered engineer. Similarly work on electrics should be handled by a competent electrician who can self-certify their work.

  • Cut Back your Trees

Another risky proposition for the amateur DIY enthusiast is climbing trees with tools – whether it is a powerful chainsaw or an old-fashioned hand-saw.

Tree surgeons have specialist equipment and had safety training to deal with over grown trees and shrubs effectively.

  • Fit a New Carpet

A practiced carpet fitter can lay a carpet in no time at all, and although they make it look easy it takes skill and practise to cut and fit a carpet properly. One wrong cut could be a costly mistake and not stretching the carpet effectively could result in uneven wear of the carpet.

  • Lay New Paving

It’s not as easy as just putting down some slabs you have to put down several good base layers which allow drainage, prevents the growth of weeds and ensure the slabs sit flat and steady.  A good garden landscaper will provide an excellent durable path.
